I recently had the pleasure of talking with Brian K. Vaughan.
Not in any official capacity mind you, but it was still a cool experience. We were put in contact due to a little game of six degrees of separation, which was really neat. He’s an incredibly friendly and funny person, if I do say so myself.
I was a little surprised that Mr. Vaughan gave me the time of day to be honest. Especially since my opening comments to him were “I’ve never actually read anything you’ve done.” I discovered later this was a lie, as I happen to own his first ever published work. It’s an issue of
Cable for which he wrote the script. I had no idea at the time though, so I felt a bit sheepish talking to a man I claimed to be a fan of, never having read anything he’d written. I knew all about his major books, which include: Y, The Last Man Standing, Ex Machina and The Runaways. This didn’t make me feel much better about talking to him though. I would have preferred to preface our conversation with “I’ve read everything you’ve ever written, and it’s pure literary gold.” Alas this was not the case.
In spite of this however he still found time, in a ridiculously busy schedule, to talk with me. That’s a good guy for you. We didn’t talk about anything formal in terms of his work I’m afraid. So I may have to approach him again sometime. I got the chance to ask him for a few tips on the business, after explaining to him the steps I had already taken in my own endeavors. He told me that with everything I’d already created and come up with, there was very little left he could say. He explained that most of the time it was simply determination and being in the right place at the right time that would get you in. He was kind enough to give me a few other little tidbits… but they really only relate to myself, so I won’t bother sharing. Suffice it to say, he was nothing but forth coming with any info he felt he could provide, without breaching any of his legal commitments of course.
Brian has a personal website that you can visit if you would like more information on him than I can provide. It’s
www.bkv.tv. He seems to update it pretty regularly with his goings on, so if you’re a fan you can get some sneak previews of his works. If you ever get the chance to talk with him at a convention I highly suggest you do. He’s a great guy. (Gosh I hope he reads this, so that when I do ask him for an official interview, he says “Yes”… hint, hint, hint.)
