It’s been a while since we did a straight up review of Heroes here, but last nights episode totally warrants one. Wow! What a great show. For anyone out there who isn’t checking this show out every Monday night, you’re totally missing out. Get on it. This is, without a doubt, the best show on television right now. Let’s forget for a moment that I’m a fanatical fan of all things superhero, and focus on the production value of the show.
Writing - Solid and well paced. The hour of television always flies by. At the end of the show you feel satisfied with the section of story, and have learned enough about each character, that you’re happy with how it ended… but at the same time you’re left holding your breath until next Monday (Heroic Arts does not endorse, support or recommend holding your breath for a week.) You know that questions will be answered in each episode, but new ones will be asked to keep the show new and exciting. The relationships between the characters are strong and believable.
Special Effects – Realistic and well done. Often with television, special effects suffer due to lower budgets and shorter filming schedules. This is not the case in Heroes. Each effect is well crafted, well planned and looks realistic. There is a minimalist quality to everything. Simple camera tricks and suggestion are used just as much as CGI. It is all used very tastefully, and carefully planned so that it adds to the overall quality of the show.
Acting – Each person brings something to their roll. They give you a sense that each character they play is real. You feel real emotions for these characters. The meetings, friendships and connections made through the show help you to associate with each character on a very real level. I have yet to experience a moment in the show where I lean back and think “Man, I didn’t buy that at all!” Each actor and actress suits their role perfectly.
So that’s the low down on the show. If you’re not watching it already you really should, even if you’re not a huge superhero fan. I guarantee you it’s an excellent drama and far better than most of the (not-so) reality television that ruthlessly devours hours of broadcast time.
Now, let’s move on to last night’s episode – This is going to be full of spoilers so stop reading now if you care to.

You know that moment when Peter tosses Claude off the building, jumps off too, catches him and takes off into the air? I jumped off my couch and cheered. I know it’s lame, but these are the kinds of reactions I have to this show, it’s just that great. Then later we have the confrontation between Peter and Isaac. That’s a very cool scene, it’s intense and we get to see Peter really lay it on with the powers. I have to say I’m a little disappointed that Simone’s dead, I liked her. It’s a good thing Peter’s been in contact with future Hiro!
Speaking of Hiro; yeah his powers are back!
It’s nice to see groups of people coming together too. Matt and Ted teaming up was a pretty cool little piece. I’m totally excited to see where their confrontation with Mr. Bennet(HRG) goes; especially knowing that Claire is leaning to their side. Next weeks episode looks like we get some serious back story on HRG and Claire. I’m really looking forward to learning that history.
Heroes is truly a show that seems to get better each week. I think I’m most excited about next season though. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE this season. The origin stories and the way the group is coming together is playing out amazingly; but I really want to see what it’s like when the dust settles. What will happen next season when everyone has established them selves? Will they form a team? Will they purposefully use their powers for the betterment of the world? Will they get cool uniforms? These are the things I’m really pumped about, but they clearly won’t come to be in this season. I know this season is building to an amazing finish, but I think those questions will be left for next year.
