The first interview I had with some comic creatives were the comic duo of the Kitchen Brothers. Writers, creators and artists of the comics “The Possum” (www.PossumPress.com) and “Spy Guy” Blair and Mike Kitchen were a lot of fun to talk to and their comics stood out as funny and different looking, I made a point of picking up a copy of the whole line (you can bet a review will be coming soon) as well as some great sketches that they were doing on the spot for free with the purchase of their comics (anything free at Hobby Star show appeared rare and was very welcome). The brothers explained to me that they have been creating comics since high school with works dating back to the 1990’s with “Spy Guy: Bootleg” and since then have been heating things heat back up by releasing new comics between 2001-2005 with “Spy Guy: Mini”, “The Possum” and the soon to be released “Spud” coming out in late 2006 early 2007. They also happened to be giving limited pre-release copies away of the upcoming Spud comic at their convention booth that I am happy to my very own numbered copy in hand.
They went on to tell me that this convention was the their first and certainly not their last as they assured me it had not only been a very fun experience for them, but one that is introducing their characters to a wide audience helping them sell their self published works and forwarding / funding their future efforts. As I had mentioned before the brothers were also providing free sketches with each purchase. And with no doubt they came though for the crew here at Heroic Arts Comics. Mike Kitchen created a wonderful Heroic Arts inspired Spy Guy inked sketch, while Blair Kitchen’s punny Possum pic not only entertained me and our team, but appears to have come from Blair’s personal “Favorites” pile as it is the exact one he features on his own blog about the show. I look forward to reading the various works of the Kitchen brothers in the all in one pack I picked up at the show and writing a detailed review on their work someday soon, and otherwise wish them the best of luck with their comics and would like to thank them for showing that independents can produce not only some great work, but can make it to “The Show” creating some buzz if you just hang in there.
